Fort Loramie FFA Participates in Food Science CDE

Just recently members competed in the Food Science and Technology CDE. The Fort Loramie FFA sent two teams to the District 5 contest. Team 1 consisted of Elizabeth Kunkler, Andrea Meyer, Makenzie Ranly and Amanda Seger, and placed 9th out of the 40 teams present. Elizabeth Kunkler ranked 5th overall as an individual. Team 2 consisted of Nicole Allen, Nolan Holthaus, Maxine Siegel and Noah Siegel. Members competed in a team activity to develop a food product, design the product label, answer a series of questions and calculate a nutrition fact label for the product. Each member also worked individually by taking an online written exam, completing aroma and taste tests, categorizing customer complaint letters, and identifying safety and sanitation problems in food processing facilities.

Ranly, a first year member, says the contest taught her many things about food processing and will be taking part in this contest next year. Fourth year member, Kunkler, advises that a participant must put forth a lot of effort in order to succeed in this contest. Their guidance and coaching was given by the Fort Loramie FFA advisor, Mr. Pleiman.
