Student Services Information

Fort Loramie Schools is dedicated to provide excellent and equitable services for all students within the educational curriculum, including special education, gifted education, English as a second language services, early childhood education, academic interventions, Section 504 services, and related services such as speech and language therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, transportation, and psychological services. Support is also available through our school counselors, school nurse, social services, home instruction and alternative educational opportunities.

Special Education

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law that makes available to children with disabilities a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE).

Child Find:

Fort Loramie Schools participates in an effort to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities from age 3 through age 21.  “Child with a disability” means a child evaluated in accordance with rule 3301-51-06 of the Administrative Code as having one of 13 categories and who, by reason thereof, requires special education and related services.

Continuum of Services:

For students that qualify, Fort Loramie Schools provides a continuum of special education programs and services. Children ages 3-21, who are identified in the public school system as a child with a disability, are eligible for these services and supported through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). These services include integrated preschool programs (contracted through Shelby Hills Preschool) for children identified with special needs ages 3-5 years. Additionally, services could include general education teachers working with intervention specialists and/or other related service professionals to meet the needs of students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. Fort Loramie offers a continuum of services based on the individual needs of the student as documented in their IEP. Other special education related services, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech/language therapy, etc. are available based on a student's IEP. Students who require special programs that are not provided by the Fort Loramie Schools may attend regional programs such as the Midwest Regional Educational Services Center (MRESC) satellite classrooms located in other districts.

Anyone knowing of a child with a disability living in the Fort Loramie Local School District attendance area should contact the Student Services Director, Betsy Jones, at 937-295-2931.

A Guide to Parent Rights in Special Education

Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 stands as civil rights legislation with the purpose of preventing discrimination against students with disabilities in educational systems. Specifically, it prohibits biased treatment of students who have physical or mental impairments and guarantees them the right to receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE).

This civil rights law mandates that the educational needs of students with disabilities must be met just as effectively as those of their non-disabled peers. To qualify for assistance through a Section 504 plan, a student must meet eligibility requirements either as an individual with a disability or as someone whose impairment significantly hinders their ability to access learning within the educational setting due to a learning, behavioral, or health-related condition.

If you have questions regarding Section 504 plans, please contact the Student Services Director, Betsy Jones,  at 937-295-2931.
