Response to Intervention (RTI) is a systematic approach aimed at assisting students who encounter academic challenges. It does not prescribe a particular program or teaching method but rather relies on data-driven strategies to proactively address and aid students in need. Depending on the level of need, interventions can be implemented across various tiers. Once a specific area requiring improvement is identified, the child's classroom teacher may either apply a research-based intervention themselves or seek support from other educators within the school, such as a reading intervention specialist. Throughout the RTI process, continuous data collection occurs to monitor the student's progress in the targeted area. Students may transition in and out of RTI as interventions prove successful in closing learning gaps or as new areas requiring attention surface. The duration of a student's participation in RTI is flexible, especially when data indicates continued progress. It's important to note that RTI is distinct from special education programs; however, it plays a vital role in identifying students who do not respond to classroom interventions and may require more intensive, individually tailored instruction to make educational strides.
